Reflective statement
This was just a plain white T-shirt I wore to my grandmother's funeral (Asians wear white to a funeral). As you can see it's very plain and I wanted it to have a new purpose in life. I initially painted out the design with Chinese inks, scanned it, edited it with gradients and text in Adobe Illustrator and then painted it onto the T-shirt.

In uni I chose to study conservation biology and zoology. Even though I haven't made a career out of it and I don't feel I've done as much volunteering as I should have done, I still think the environment and conservation biology is important. It saddens me when I find out another species has gone extinct and it makes me saddened and disillusioned by mankind. Fashion can make important statements and this shirt is a reminder of what we are doing to the world so hopefully will remember what they are doing to the environment and change for the better. It also serves as a bit of a conversation starter. My family had no idea what this shirt meant and thought that zebras weren't endangered at all (There are a few species of zebra. The Plains Zebra is relatively common but mountain zebras are endangered). I sincerely hope the concept is understood by the rest of the world.

Constructive criticism
I painted this design onto the T-shirt with Permaset silk screening inks. Some areas of the shirt look very drybrushed unfortunately. I'm still debating as to whether or not I should have used a stencil. The inks were also very thick and I couldn't think of a way diluting them to make them thinner and easier to paint onto the shirt. Any ideas? There's not much point in me getting a silkscreen - unfortunately I don't do silk screening often enough to warrant a set. Still any ideas would be great. Constructive criticism on the design is also appreciated.

I think the best part of this artwork is the way the zebra's stripes seamlessly fade away. The idea and the execution are both stunning and I love the fact that you painted this onto something with meaning, I think it takes real courage to make something that powerful and permanent. (It takes courage to make art in general but you take it further than that). This topic is one often visited but I have never seen it done like this and I love it. This inspires me to write and draw more, because isn't this the main point of art? To touch and change and make things like this beautiful somehow?
